Frustrated Woman Using Laptop ca. 2002

Hello there, and welcome aboard the Struggle Bus! We have reached capacity as of about three weeks ago, so at this point in time, get in where you fit in.  No- there are no more supplies available, the Starbucks machine (located in the back) is officially in overdrive, and sleep is unheard of on board this luxurious hell ride. However, we ask that you bear with us in this chaotic time as the reward of joining us will be well worth it in the long run.

Hopefully .

Thanks, Management.

Ahh, the first days of school. The season we all love to hate. Whether you just started your last year of undergrad, first day of grad school, or like myself, your first day on the job, we all are aware of the stress that comes with new beginnings. As exciting as it can be, turning over a new leaf can just as well burn you out. So in hopes of keeping sanity, here are three things to take with you everyday as you embark upon your new journey.

  1. Remember your purpose.

Often times we find ourselves getting sucked into the hoopla around our goal rather than our goal itself. Peers and coworkers will attempt to be your demise, believe me. I’ve only been on the job less than a month and already know more than I want to about a plethora of things. And we all know how the college scene goes. Leave the messy folks alone and stay focused. Do not let the workload freak you out, it is all a mind game and only the strong will survive. This new opportunity has been granted to you for a reason, don’t drop the ball. Be it a dream, a degree, or you being there simply for the pay check (if that alone soothes your soul)- remember your purpose and stay relentlessly committed to your goal .

2. Be ready to shift into overdrive at all times.

Your best will never be good enough. As you start anew, push yourself to be a better you every single day. You will be slapped in the face with last minute changes and unreachable tasks, and that’s just the way it is. Expect the unexpected and be ready to work. You’re new to this so everyone is waiting for you to mess up. Refocus. Regroup. Restart.

3. Know that in the words of Kevin Hart, “It’s. about. to go. down.”

I’m going to be honest with you guys. Grades will fumble, plans will flop, monthly bills will steal your joy. But hey, that is okay! You can do it. Prepare for the long nights now, so when they arrive it is no surprise. Life is going to feel like it is getting the best of you but your best is yet to come.

Today’s Keyword: Conquer |ˈkäNGkər| (v.) : successfully overcome (a problem or weakness);  climb (a mountain) successfully

Remember, it may seem ever lasting now, but you won’t be on the Struggle Bus for long. Life would not be life without a few pitfalls every now and then. While starting new presents us with many opportunities and blessings, it also requires new levels of understanding and comfortability, because it also comes with lots of stress and difficulty as well. It is time to conquer your new journey. Just like I tell my students, “if you are uncomfortable, you are in the right place.” It is time to overcome being in your comfort zone and reach new heights. Conquer yourself, believing that you are capable to do any and everything you put your mind to- no matter how hard that may be to believe in this moment.  Accept all the stress and chaos now as stepping stones to that end purpose, and if focused, I guarantee you you will conquer everything you wanted this year and more.

“Happiness is like those palaces in fairy tales whose gates are guarded by dragons: we must fight in order to conquer it.”  – Alexandre Dumas

Keep fighting. The struggle is almost over.

From one Conqueror to another,

This is the type of message that needs to be printed and posted on the wall as a constant reminder and source of encouragement/motivation. Well said as always! And I truly agree, monthly bills will steal your joy! Lol! You are on point with everything in this article. Looking forward to your next piece. 🙂
